THE ZOOIPRAXISCOPE

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE'S

ZOOIPRAXISCOPE

*SELECTS CUT FROM A LONGER PIECE THAT ORIGINALLY AIRED ON NBC.

I had the rare opportunity to spend a day with what is believed to be the first movie projector in history. It was created by Eadweard Muybridge in 1879 and now lives in storage below Stanford University. The zoopraxiscope projected images from rotating glass disks in rapid succession to give the impression of motion. The stop-motion images were initially painted onto the glass, as silhouettes. A horse galloping was among the first to be projected.
